Join us for a very special workshop led by beloved Ventura artist and longtime Ventura College art professor Hiroko Yoshimoto! This rare workshop will explore the history of Chinese characters and how they derived from pictographs. Students will learn basic definitions of Chinese characters and their pictographic origins from the Han period, and will experiment with traditional Sumi brushes and India ink to explore calligraphy. This class is appropriate for everyone ages 16 and over. The cost of the workshop is $50.00 per person. All skill levels are welcome and all supplies are provided. Preregistration is required and space is extremely limited. The workshop will be taught on Saturday, June 22, 2024, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Please note, Yoshimoto will also be hosting a free lecture on the history of Chinese characters immediately preceding the workshop from 12:00 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. Students enrolled in the workshop are expected to attend the lecture beforehand. Preregistration/reservations are not required for the lecture.

The workshop and lecture will be held inside the Santa Paula Art Museum’s Cole Creativity Center, located at 123 N 10th St, Santa Paula, CA. Free parking is available behind the building and students may enter through the front or back door.
