Learn the fundamentals of hand building ceramics in this four-part course for all skill levels, inside SPAM’s Cole Creativity Center. Hand building is the oldest form of making pottery and art! It involves only the hands and simple tools and is a truly grounding and inspiring way to explore clay. Whether you have some experience working with clay or none, this is the place where you can build your skills and your confidence. Teaching artist Jynell Dimalanta will teach you the most common hand building techniques, including pinching, coiling, and slab building. You’ll also learn about glazing so you can see your work develop from raw clay to a finished piece. You’ll finish the course with several handmade pieces to take home*. (*Every student will have their artwork fired in our kiln, by our kiln technician. Pick-up times will be arranged by class.)

Clay is also very messy, so please dress in clothing you don’t mind getting stained and covered in clay. You are welcome to bring an apron and towel/rag for wiping your hands throughout the process. Long hair must be pulled back as a safety precaution.
