Kurinuki, meaning "hollowing out" or "carving out," is a traditional Japanese method of hand-building ceramics, where forms are crafted by gradually hollowing out solid blocks of clay. Whether you’re a beginner or know your way around clay, you will learn the fundamentals of Kurinuki, from preparing clay to shaping and carving techniques. The Kurinuki aesthetic walks the line between being made by human hands and looking like it’s been picked from nature. From creating functional vessels to expressive sculptural pieces, this two-part workshop encourages creativity and experimentation, bridging the gap between tradition and contemporary artistry. This course will have two sessions: the first session will focus on the creation of your artworks while the second session will focus on glazing the works you’ve created!
This course will be taught on two consecutive Saturdays: February 1; February 8, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
This workshop is for ages 16 and over. The cost of this workshop is $100 per person. All skill levels are welcome and all materials are provided. Preregistration is required and space is limited. The workshop will be held inside the Cole Creativity Center located at 123 N 10th St, Santa Paula, CA. Free parking is available directly behind the building and students may enter through the front or back door.

*Please note: Long nails can make working with clay frustrating. We recommend trimming your nails down before attending class. Clay is also very messy, so please dress in clothing you don’t mind getting stained and covered in clay. You are welcome to bring an apron and towel/rag for wiping your hands throughout the process. Long hair must be pulled back as a safety precaution.
