Artist Biography
Susan Petty was born in Ventura, California in 1940, and played often as a child on the ranch where she now lives. Her love of art blossomed when her family moved to Alexandria, Virginia, allowing for regular visits to Washington, D.C.'s many galleries and museums. Petty received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting in 1962. She continued with graduate work in painting at the Corcoran Gallery in D.C., and worked as a commercial artist, including freelance work for the exhibits and publications departments of the Library of Congress.
Petty returned to Ventura County in 1977. Since then, the California landscape, its details, and the particulars of her garden have served as constant inspirations. For many years, watercolor was her primary medium. More recently she has returned to oils and to her first love, drawing. Composition is of greatest importance to Petty, with expressive line and beautiful paint indivisible seconds.
Susan Petty's work can be found in many private and public collections including the Santa Paula Art Museum and the City of Ventura Municipal Art Collection.
