Additional Information
Set off by a beautifully ornate frame, this pretty piece will make for a stunning focal point in any room. While the painting is unsigned and the artist unknown, the scene brings to mind the work of famous French Impressionist Edgar Degas (1834-1917). Degas created over 200 artworks depicting ballerinas during his career, including “Three Dancers in an Exercise Hall” (pictured below). Degas was particularly fascinated by the lives of dancers backstage and offstage, a reality often filled with physical and emotional toil.
The unknown painter of our ballerina auction artwork almost certainly took inspiration from Degas’ work: the grouping of young dancers in a rehearsal room; the pastel color palette; the swift brushstrokes conveying the fullness of the tulle skirts. If we had to put a title to this untitled auction artwork, we’d call it, “An Ode to Degas.”
“Three Dancers in an Exercise Hall” by Edgar Degas, 1873, Oil on canvas, 11 x 9 inches, Private Collection.
