From Picasso and Matisse, to Kahlo and Hockney, some of the most famous artists in history painted portraits of their pets—and now you can too! Join teaching artist Jem Morris inside SPAM’s Cole Creativity Center for a step-by-step breakdown of the pet portraiture process, including preliminary drawing, color choices, and painting techniques from a photo of your own pet (or any animal you deem portrait-worthy)!

This six-part course will be taught on six consecutive Saturdays: April 19, April 26, May 3, May 10, May 17, May 24, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

This course is appropriate for everyone ages 16 and over. The cost of this course is $225.00 per person for all four sessions. All skill levels are welcome and all materials will be provided. This class is for adults, ages 16+. Preregistration is required.

About Our Teaching Artist: An LA native, Jem Morris completed her BFA at Academy of Art University in San Francisco in 2019. She has explored many styles including surrealism, abstraction, landscape, figurative painting, and pet portraits in the traditional mediums of oil, acrylic, watercolor, graphite, charcoal, and most recently gouache. Jem has been teaching painting and sculpting for both kids and adults across Ventura County for the past 5 years. Her current work could be found on her Instagram account: @jemfarts
