Artist Biography

Jefferson Stephen Ward was born in St, Joseph, Missouri in 1876. He studied with Maurice Braun (1877-1941), one of California’s preeminent impressionist painters, in San Diego. 

During the 1920s, Ward lived in Glendale, California, where he opened an art gallery with his son Thurlow Ward. By the early 1930s, he was in Jacksonville, Oregon, but soon returned to Los Angeles where he spent the remainder of his life. 

Ward was an early member of the California Art Club; the Artland Club in Los Angeles; Painters and Sculptors of Los Angeles; and the Glendale Art Association.
